Your Guide to Planning a Safe, Scenic, and Seamless Mountain Elopement

As one of Banff’s most experienced local wedding photographers — with over 15 years of photographing elopements, intimate weddings, and engagements throughout the Canadian Rockies — I have had the honor of capturing hundreds of personal elopements in this breathtaking Landscape. Here you will find information on how to Elope in Banff. Get in touch full my full guide and list of vendor recommendations.

I am not just behind the camera. I’m also a certified ACMG hiking & IGA guide, which makes me the only licensed hiking guide and professional wedding photographer living in the Banff area. That means I can get you to incredible, lesser-known locations safely — with all the right permits, insurance, and local knowledge.
Planning to elope in Banff National Park? Whether you’re dreaming of turquoise lakes, golden larches, snow-capped peaks, or glacier-fed rivers, this guide will walk you through how to elope in Banff — safely, legally, and memorably.

Why Choose A Banff Elopement?
Banff National Park is Canada’s first and most famous national park, drawing millions of visitors each year for its iconic peaks, alpine lakes, and untouched backcountry. Covering more than 6,600 square kilometers of protected wilderness, Banff offers nearly endless possibilities for couples looking to elope in a dramatic natural setting.
Eloping in Banff is about more than just the views. It's a deeply personal and adventurous way to begin your life together. With the right guidance, your Banff elopement can be completely private, meaningful, and stress-free.

Where to Elope in Banff National Park
There are countless stunning locations to say your vows in Banff, from popular icons to hidden gems. Here are a few of the best. I have a private list available for my clients but here are some of my favorite locations.
Lake Louise
A world-famous location known for its turquoise water, glacier backdrop, and sunrise light. While it's popular, it offers incredible beauty and is especially peaceful in the early hours or shoulder seasons.

Moraine Lake
Famous for its deep blue waters and towering peaks, Moraine Lake is a dream elopement destination. With the road closed to public traffic during most of the year, it’s now accessible only by shuttle or guided vehicle — which I provide to all couples eloping here.

Icefields Parkway
Stretching from Lake Louise to Jasper, this scenic highway is lined with waterfalls, glacier viewpoints, alpine lakes, and remote trailheads. It’s perfect for couples wanting a more off-the-beaten-path experience.

Secret Backcountry Spots
With my Association of Canadian Mountain guides certification, I’m licensed to safely hike couples into lesser-known mountain locations that the average visitor will never reach — ideal for elopements that prioritize privacy, safety, and an epic setting.

When Is the Best Time to Elope in Banff?
Every season in Banff has its unique beauty and challenges. Here's what to expect during each:
Spring (April to June)
Fresh snow still blankets the peaks
Quieter trails and fewer visitors
Lakes remain frozen into May early June
Weather can be unpredictable, including late snowstorms
Summer (July to September)
Long daylight hours and warmer weather
Lakes are fully thawed and vibrant in color
Ideal conditions for hiking and backcountry ceremonies
Busiest time of year with the most crowds
Fall (September to October)
The famous golden larch trees turn color in late September
Cooler temperatures and fewer people
Higher elevation trails may be closed due to snow
Great light and calm weather for afternoon ceremonies
Winter (November to March)
A snow-covered wonderland with cozy, romantic scenery
Great for skating, skiing, and lodge elopements
Cold temperatures and limited accessibility to some locations
Moraine Lake and high-elevation roads are closed for the season
As your photographer and guide, I help you select the right date and location based on your vision, physical ability, and the seasonal conditions in the mountains.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Banff?
Yes. Elopements in Banff National Park require a Special Event Registration Form to be submitted to Parks Canada. There is no fee, but this ensures your ceremony follows all park regulations and environmental protections.
Some of the main conditions include:
Maximum of 20 people (including vendors)
No tents, shelters, amplified music, or generators
Limited props like a small arch, table, or chairs
Quiet, low-impact ceremonies that respect nature
All vehicles must park in designated lots
Leave No Trace principles must be followed
I help all of my couples navigate this process and ensure we choose a location and time that meets all of Parks Canada’s requirements.

Do You Need a Park Pass?
Yes. Every visitor who stops in Banff National Park must display a valid Parks Canada Pass in their vehicle. You can purchase a day pass or a Discovery Pass (valid for a full year) either online, at the park gate, or at a visitor center in Banff or Lake Louise.

How to Get to Banff
Banff is located about 130 kilometers (90 minutes) west of Calgary International Airport (YYC). Renting a car is usually the most flexible option, especially if you want to explore the park at your own pace. During winter, a vehicle with snow tires is essential. For those visiting during peak summer months or wanting a stress-free ride to places like Moraine Lake, I also help coordinate private transportation options for couples.
